Pirating had reduced, relatively because of the pricing of streaming services. If the number of streaming services will increase, then I can see piracy increasing.
Look at Spotify and music. I don't know anyone who pirates music now because streaming is so much cheaper and convenient.
But looks like the big studio moguls just don't learn their lesson. Price it just right and you'll seriously minimise piracy plus you'll rope in more subscribers.
I can see it now: "Lon by Southwest!!". 😅😂🤣
Try PlutoTV, if you haven't yet. It's 100% free with a reasonable frequency of ads. Doesn't even require a login to try out. They've got an app on most platforms, including game consoles. Registering a free account with them allows you to customize the channel guide, so you can hide content you don't watch or don't want kids to watch.
Traditional live TV is something I generally only use for background noise, so PlutoTV is great for a free service to complement Prime Video and others that offer the exact content I want to pay for.
Yep, as someone with young kids; I plan on keeping Netflix until the Disney service is out. Then gonna try an experiment, dropping Netflix for couple months and doing Disney only. (Also have Amazon Prime). We'll see, but I don't really have time for Netflix, I personally get more value watching YouTube as I work on leather workshop.
Netflix and YoutubeTV, DirectvNow, Sling, etc., really aren't the same thing even if the method of delivery is. I am not interested in paying for live TV streaming so I use OTA instead. Most of what I watch on OTA is news. But for original on demand content, I do prefer Netflix, Amazon Video, and HBO. It's convenient and ready for streaming when I am ready for watching it. It's not censored like OTA and it doesn't have adverts. I don't care for bluray discs because I watch something once and move on. I do agree that Netflix price increases are getting out of control. But on demand original sources really aren't that many when you exclude live tv streaming. I will probably keep (1) Netflix, Amazon (included with my prime), HBO (only seasonally for GoT), (2) Hulu ($1/mo), and come November, (3) Disney+.
As for paying per episodes or seasons, I see no value there either. Like others have said, I wait until the season is complete and I subscribe for a month and binge complete seasons. cheaper IMO. My biggest complaints are the rising internet service prices. My 24 month contract with Cox Communications expired for 150/10 service ($58.99), now $93/mo . 36% increase and they still have a Monopoly in my town.
I went to see the battleship NC and they have very old WW 2 computers on it . would be nice to hear about old tech and computer history
I enjoy watching your videos. They are so informative.
Could you please put on a video on Using Netgear Nighthawk X10 Router as Plex media server… and please also give info on how many concurrent streams or transcodes it can handle at a time as well as if it can handle LiveTV and how.
I'd really appreciate it.
Huh.. no Salvage-I merchandise? They did it before Elon Musk
Great show! Glad you had a good experience at the launch! In person it's crazy real scary surround sound!
I agree Netflix is getting too expensive. I've been a subscriber of Netflix from their beginning when they did DVD mailings. I sunscribe to their 4k service but I don't watch it much anymore. However, my wife and kids watch it a bunch so I might lower my subscription to 1080p to save a couple of bucks per month. The thing with Netflix is they make it super easy for non techies to find and watch their shows. In fact, our TV remote has a Netflix button on it as many remotes do nowadays. One pro for me about Netflix is they don't charge per episode.
I also have Amazon prime video as part of my subscription and while it's nice to be able to pay to watch a movie it's annoying to have to pay $2 on up for each episode of something as simple as HGTV episodes.
I also have Hulu because it came for free with my Sprint cellular phone service but we rarely watch hulu because we usually don't have enough time to watch anymore shows. "Streaming overload"
I too would like to watch the latest star trek without signing up for CBS streaming service. Again "streaming overload!"
I think tonight I'll just watch my free tv channels over my free rooftop antenna! Or maybe read a book. 😊
My 2 cents worth on streaming. 😎
I have to agree about streaming. Its becoming too many. Also, im looking at if the cost of Netflix makes sense anymore. Why wife does use it way more than I but there are other sources of streaming out there.
I do the same thing with Netflix!! Haha
I believe all of these streaming services are on a month to month contract. You don't have to subscribe to all of them for 12 months of the year. Consumers have to become smarter and become a "nomadic streamer". A nomadic streamer is a person who wonders from one streaming service to another streaming service over a period of a year. I subscribe to Netflix for only 3 months (in the summer) a year. I can watch just about everything I want during those 13 weeks. I probably cram into 13 weeks more than most people watch spread out over 12 months at 25% the cost. You don;t have to subscribe to Disney+ for 12 months. One could probably see everything that one could want to watch in a 1 month period. At most 2. Disney+ is just not going to have that much new content, especially the first year.
Get use to it, Netflix ain't going nowhere ,there Quality of shows make you subscribe $16 is not a make or breaking point . I am not a Star Wars or Disney fan. For the reason abc and Disney bored
I think they ended the Shuttle program way too soon. Was a great platform I thought.
Yeah, I end up watching Star Trek TNG instead of watching something new because I don't want to search for new stuff.
The only reason I'm sticking with YouTube TV is that everything I watch I have recorded and so far I've been able to scrub through commercials. I don't subscribe to cable TV.
I'm not happy with YouTube Premium. I really get nothing from it. It doesn't benefit my channel at all. I'm subscribed just as a favor to creators.
As far as your comments on Netflix and all the other streaming services, I have to say I'm as stymied as the next guy. Even my local cable company, Spectrum, now offers a streaming service. Buying shows by the episode doesn't make a lot of financial sense either. Let's take your typical HBO series, with 10 episodes per season or so. The normal price is about $2 an episode, and frankly I just watch them once. I can just as easily wait for the end of the season, pay for a one-month subscription, usually $15 or less, and watch them on demand. If I'm smart about it, I can wait until the end of the year and watch all of their series I like for that year in that one month. Maybe you should do a series on this subject?
6.99 but the price will jump at least to $10 by the end of the year.
Hey Lon, great video. Just tried searching for your video where you talked about your weight loss using technology, can't seem to find it, hope you'll send me the link. Keep up the good work!
That buying some favor shows on physical media and pay downloads as well. I knew couple years ago that priced services were going up like cable.
Really enjoy your channel Lon.
What about Apple and their streaming service? Get money out of people monthly for that? And of course their Monthly drain on games now! Used to be you buy an app/game no monthly fees and can use it on all your devices! Gee you now or soon you pay a monthly fee to use it on all your devices! Just another way to get money from the poor! I guess my iPad will be obsolete soon since I can't afford a monthly fee for every app I have! By the way how do we shame Apple into letting 3rd parties fix Apple devices? Rick
Philo has been ok Lon.
Thanks for the Void review! Wreck it Ralph is lot of fun. It’s a bit more competitive than Star Wars, and includes some fun mini games. Did you duel wield two blasters when you went through?
Modern NAS are absolutely servers. There is no question about it.
BTW Lon you've done great in keeping the weight off!
Philo ($16/month), sling TV Blue ($25/month) and Fubo TV (overpriced) are all ESPN free.
Lon, I purchased a QNAP in 2014 and have been happy with it. However, still to this day I wished I purchased the Synology. I agree with you with the overall function and OS. At the time of purchase I was getting more with the QNAP vs the Synology. My next purchase will be a Synology.
Regarding the "ala carte" services, until they offer a true choice in which channels you want I refuse to use these services or go beyond the trial period. It's so ridiculous that customers are bullied into paying for channels that if things don't change, then I see a couple of things will happen:
1) more Youtube livestreaming of copyrighted material than what's currently going on now
OR
2) people will seek out the shady sites that offer the premium content for free.
On one hand, I don't condone doing either option, but on the other hand these network providers are giving people little choice that I can't blame them.
You got to go to see the launch, and have a youtube channel where you can post your videos, which will bring you some revenue. Be grateful for that, and shut up about finding a sponsor for these types of outings. You CLEARLY love launches, and you should just go and enjoy every single one you can, but please dont panhandle.
Was at the KSC a couple of years ago and do not remember SpaceX Merch, I would have bought some. When I was in high school you were able to go into the VAB and other actual locations.
Netflix seems to release new episodes of the shows I watch all at the same time. So I will reactivate my Netflix, watch the shows I want, then cancel it again until I see that the shows I want to see are back
We're at the point where the companies see streaming as a bit of a gold rush, but only for the big players who can afford to hang in there and possibly lose money until they can starve their smaller competitors who got in early. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I'm reaching a point where I don't particularly like much of what's on TV and find the commercials to be especially obnoxious. I've stayed focused on obtaining a decent media library, primarily by a renewed interest in DVD and Blu-ray due to many good deals out there along with a lack of personal interest in high-end, high-resolution TVs and other home theater gear(I don't care about 4K anything or HDR). I'll be just fine if I cut out all paid, monthly video services at this point, provided I back up well. As for Disney, I consider myself lucky that I did not like what they did with Star Wars, so I won't be considering their streaming service. Any big franchise is only as good as the people who made it. I find modern storytelling misses the mark for me, so I stick with the original trilogy of Star Wars and various older movies and shows that I never tire of watching. As you say, Lon, it's like comfort food. There is a real difference in the philosophy behind the way shows were made back in the day compared to now. Good luck to you figuring it all out.
Hey Lon, I also share your position on these streaming services. Netflix is getting out of control with these price increases and Ive noticed (at least for the shows i watch on there) they actually release them on blu ray. I might look into that instead of paying every month and get more use out of my Plex Pass lifetime subscription.
But the Disney+ service looks like a really great value with having all the classics on there with The Simpsons as well. I did hear a rumor that everything, or most, of their content will be in 4K. Not sure if thats the case but that will for sure add a lot of value to it
